Lillian knew it was silly, but her heart wouldnât stop hammering in her chest as she picked up the cooking gloves from the table. This was her second attempt at cooking something on her own. The other day, sheâd made soup, which was a relatively easy meal. Today, she was baking coyote meat. Since Mic had caught and skinned the animal, she felt it was only fair she try her hand at cooking it. She wanted to do her part in helping him around the place.
In the month since sheâd come here, she was already forgetting her old life. Today, she was even wearing the deerskin dress. It a little loose on her, but it suited her just fine, and as Mic had promised, she was cooler in it. She didnât wear it when they went out to set traps because she didnât want to get her legs or arms dirty, but it was perfect for household work.
She checked the clock on the wall above the cook stove. Mic had told her it would be ready in another minute. She tapped her foot on the floor as she waited for the hand on the clock to hit the next minute. She really hoped this turned out right. It smelled good through the cabin. That meant there was a good chance sheâd done this right. Mic had told her as long as there wasnât smoke coming out from the oven, she was alright. She checked the oven door. There didnât seem to be any smoke coming from it.
She glanced up at the clock again. Good! It was time.
She slipped on the gloves. They were Micâs so they were big, but she was careful to keep them on as she opened the oven door. She backed away for a moment, just in case a large billow of smoke came out at her. But, thankfully, it didnât.
She stepped closer and saw the gravy sheâd help Mic make bubbling on top of the meat that was in the pan. Everything looked like it should.
Encouraged, she got a firm hold on the pan and pulled it out of the oven. She set the pan on top of the cook stove and shut the oven door. She inspected the meat again, this time taking a moment to inhale the aroma. Her mouth watered in anticipation. She hoped this tasted as good as it smelled.
She took off the gloves and set them on the table. Then she finished making the salad. Cutting up vegetables from the garden was easy. That didnât require any instructions beyond, âHereâs the knife.â
Anyone watching her would probably think she was silly to be so excited about cooking, but it was the first time sheâd ever done anything on her own, besides escape Virginia on a train and arrange for the stagecoach ride out to the Wyoming wilderness. All of her life, servants had done stuff for her. She hadnât had a reason to do anything herself.
Now, however, she did. In fact, there were a lot of things she could do herself.
