Chapter 18

“You okay?” Soos repeated.

“Um, I guess so . . . I mean, yeah,” Bea lied.

“You don’t look so good,” Soos countered.

“I’m just feeling a little . . . Well, a little off, I guess.”

“That doesn’t sound good,” Soos said. “Off like ‘I’m dying from cancer’ off or just off like, ‘I had too many beers last night’ off.”

“You know I don’t drink,” Bea fired back, “but like the latter, I guess.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, this is going to sound crazy,” Bea said, “but . . .”

As Bea’s voice trailed off, Soos sat patiently, waiting for her to finish.

But Bea was no longer looking at Soos. She was looking over his shoulder. Directly behind him was Sarah with a finger over her mouth in the universal sign to shut the hell up.

“Um . . .nothing,” Bea finished.

“Doesn’t seem like nothing to me,” Soos said. After a long pause, he continued. “You know, you can talk to me about anything.”

Not wanting to admit that she was losing her mind, that she had fallen asleep and woken up half a day later with no memory of it – she didn’t even consider the possibility that she was still sleeping and, let’s not forget, she was seeing a dead person – she decided to be honest but change the subject.

“I’m just so tired of this school. Tired of everyone in it.”

“No offense taken,” Soos said with a grin.

“I don’t mean you,” Bea said.

“I know,” Soos quickly interjected. “Just trying to lighten what is clearly a very dark mood.”

“It’s just my senior year is not shaping up the way I thought it would. We are supposed to be ruling the school, having the best year of our lives, and I’m not.”

“Yeah,” Soos agreed, “but that’s just BS stuff from movies and TV shows. High school sucks.”

Bea grinned. “I know, but when you look around, I feel like I’m constantly second, or third or fourth, fiddle. I never measure up. The other kids are paired up and rocking school and sports and all of that. Look at Steve and his cronies, and let’s not forget Angela.”

“Angela who?” Soos asked with his typical grin.

“And that, my friend, is why I love you.”

“And let’s face it, I guarantee you that there wasn’t a single Angela that auditioned for and is going to get the lead in the school play.”

“I guess that’s right,” Bea said. “Do you really think I have a chance?”

“I do,” Soos said without missing a beat. “But no need to speculate, because the results get posted after lunch.”

“Crap, I totally forgot,” Bea said.

“Can I ask you something?” Soos said with a more somber tone.

“Sure,” Bea said without really thinking about it. “What’s up?”

“I don’t know,” Soos said. “You just have seemed really . . . out of it today. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” Bea said instinctively.

“Bea,” Soos started. “This is me.”

“Well, I don’t know. But it will sound crazy.”

“Try me,” Soos said. “No judgments.”

“I think my cancer is back,” Bea said. “But I think it’s in my brain this time.
