I made Quinten promise not to do anything for my birthday. I already felt like I owed him so much for basically being my bill-payer-in-chief and landlord and driver and whatever else. I didn’t need a birthday celebration of any kind.

Celebrating without dad would be weird.

Today at the library, I started reading an old western novel titled Son of a Wanted Man by Louis L’Armour. Initially, I thought it would be hard to get through those first few chapters. Dad loved westerns and Louis. Anything with scorching sun, dirt, and pistols, and he was into it.

But something strange happened. Instead of feeling sad or being overcome with grief, it made me feel closer to him. I don’t know what I believe–if there’s a heaven or where we go when we die. But seven chapters in, and I really felt like wherever his soul was, it was happy.

It was just… a really good day.

And as I shower off the earthy smell of the library, I do a private little squeal of excitement because today wasn’t just a good day—it was the first truly good day since the accident.

The day could get better if I let it. I could enjoy a movie on the couch with Quinten–soak in his scent, enjoy the raspy timbre of his laugh, lose myself in the easy conversation we share.

But that would be problematic for my heart, so instead, I will leave the best part of my day behind me and settle for a fine birthday evening.

Dressing in pajamas–this time a peach-colored matching cotton set made up of a tank top and shorts–I head out of my room trying to look as unexcited as possible. Trying to make my face appear the opposite of how I feel. Because all I want to do is spend my birthday evening with Quinten.

He’s in the kitchen, unloading plastic containers from two large white bags, and when he hears my bare feet on the wood, his blue eyes fly to me.

“Happy birthday,” he says with a grin so sexy that my heart flutters, and so does my clit.

I’ve seen him in athletic clothes before, but as he flashes that white-toothed smile at me, his dark hair shining and damp, his barrel chest tight against his white tee–I swear I whimper a little under my breath.

He’s so handsome. No, he’s fucking hot. There, I said it. He’s handsome, too, though. God, he’s just… he’s everything. If only I were older.

I don’t even let myself really look at the fitted joggers he’s wearing because the man has a perfectly plump ass, and if I check it out now, I will not be able to look him in the eye. Not to mention, with the way those pants fit, I’ll bet I could see his di–

“You already told me happy birthday this morning, and then again on the drive to school,” I say while smiling broadly, distracting myself from the thoughts of his penis. I have no business thinking about Quinten Wilder’s penis.

“You can never hear it enough when you’re young.
