A couple hours passed and I found myself throwing a ball at a stack of cans. My goal was to win a stuffed animal and then fondly give it to Rose. I was gearing up to throw the little white ball, when Henry came into view. I hadn’t seen him for what seemed like ages so naturally I hollered at him and after acknowledging my yelp he approached me.

“Hey Henry! How are you man?”

“I’m stuffed, there’s too much good food here. But other than the stomachache I’m well. How you doin’ Jay?”

“Good,” I replied. “I haven’t seen you around lately. What’ve you been up to?”

I chucked the ball at the cans knocking all but two down.

“I know… you don’t come out to the hideout anymore…”

I looked to Henry in a way that let him know how I felt. How could he still go out there with those guys and socialize with them? It just bothered me so much to think that Henry buddied up with Dave even more now.

“You still hangin’ around out there? With Dave and Roy?”

Danny who was standing next to me came closer. Rose was off with some of her female companions leaving just us guys to talk about this matter. I was prepared to get loudly verbal if it meant talking sense into our little friend.

“Yeah, almost every day. Dave said you don’t like him and so that’s why you haven’t been around,” replied Henry meekly.

“I haven’t been around, because Dave is a lunatic Henry! He’s trouble. And so is that Ferrell guy. Is he still bummin’ out there?”

“Yeah, he’s out there. But he’s an awfully nice guy Jay. He taught us how to make homemade fishing poles and we’ve been catching all sorts of fish out there. Dave seems to like him a whole lot too. He’s not trouble, and neither is Dave.”

“Henry, I know you worship Dave, and that’s, well that’s your thing. But don’t you see all the crazy stuff he does? He lies, he’s, he’s violent, and who knows what else he is. He’s just not someone we should spend our time with anymore. And Ferrell, he’s already got Dave and Roy puffin on lucky strikes and drinkin’ and they weren’t doin’ that before he got here. Does that sound like a good influence?” Danny paused before continuing. “That man said he came to look for work, right? Has he once said anything to you about a job or anything of the matter while you’re with him?”

Henry looked like a bug that had just been squashed. He was indeed the follower, the most vulnerable of the bunch. The little guy looked down in distraught at his shoes trying to find the words.

“You don’t want to hang around them, for your own good. You don’t want other people to start thinkin’ you’re like them,” I added.

Henry looked up from the dirt slowly to look up at us.

“You know,” he began, “Dave and Roy may be all what you said, and Ferrell, who knows, but you know what? They’re better friends than you two.
