CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

At 11:00 PM that night Italian time, Christian and Joan were having coffee and dessert with the chairman and CEO of Fincantieri in a private dining room at their corporate headquarters in Trieste, Italy.

“Remarkable,” said the Chairman. “Simply remarkable.”

“Thank you, Roberto,” answered Christian. “I can’t tell you how touched I am to hear you say that.”

Thanks entirely to Joan and her connections, they did get the dinner with the top leadership of Fincantieri. And for the last ninety minutes or so, Christian and Joan—but mostly Christian—had been explaining the vision for SW1 and its mission to help poor and disadvantaged children the world over.

“Christian, Joan,” began the CEO and the man tasked with the day-to-day running of Fincantieri. “We have the honor of helping a great many deserving charities, both here in Italy and around the world. But I think I can speak for myself and Roberto when I say that this…this vision of yours, has truly and deeply touched us all.”

“Thank you, Marco,” answered Joan and Christian at the same time.

“You are most welcome. Now, with your permission, I am going to speak with Roberto in Italian for just a few seconds.”

As the two very distinguished looking men spoke to each other in Italian, Joan and Christian exchanged a quick look of curiosity.

Suddenly, both men stood up.

“Joan, Christian,” said the chairman now as he looked down at the couple. “Would you mind if we stepped out of the room for just a few minutes. We need to check on a couple of issues.”

“Of course not,” said Christian. “Take as much time as you need.”

Marco then leaned down and patted him on the back.

“It will be but a few minutes. In the meantime,” he said as he waved over one of the two incredibly professional waiters standing off to the side but always ready, “have some more of our great Italian espresso and tiramisu. We will be right back.”
