SIX

Ben took off his gloves and washed his hands. He had just collected samples from a man who was so excited to get matched. It pained Ben that the government did not approve the match he had found for himself, and he had to love the woman of his dreams in secret. He spent all day making sure people were matched correctly, but the match he had found for himself was invalid, according to the sick government policies.

His mind drifted to the happy times with Mia, and his face broke into a small smile. Mia was everything he wanted in a woman. She was everything he had wished and even more. Ben had imagined having a future with her; he had imagined waking up beside her every morning and going to bed with her every night. He had imagined them in a beautiful house, an expansive backyard, and beautiful kids running around. He knew it was way too soon to be thinking about a life with her, but he couldn't help it. Ben had never been this sure about any woman in his life.

The music theme for the news came on, and his eyes darted to the Television. Lately, he had become more interested in the news hoping to hear that the government would revoke the horrible law they imposed on their citizens. Ben wanted to love freely without feeling like a criminal. He wanted to take Mia to the beautiful cities he wanted to visit. He wanted to wake up to the beautiful sight of her every day.

Ben wanted the world to know how much he loved Mia and how happy he was to have found her. Even though they had met in the most unfavorable condition, Ben knew he had found the one for him. He looked forward to seeing her in their hideout or at his house every day. Ben looked forward to seeing her talk and smile sweetly. He loved the way she threw her head back in laughter, and he loved the way she tucked a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear. Ben loved the way she bit her lip hard unconsciously. He adored her bubbly spirit and her charming aura. There was never a dull moment with her around.

Mia had walked into his life and brought the light with her. They had begun to hang out more often, but they continued to do so in secret. Ben didn't want to continue living like this. He wanted to love her and not feel like he was doing something. He wanted to take her out to dinner dates in fancy restaurants. He wanted to go out with her in broad daylight, bask in the sun in the day and feel alive at night. Ben wasn't asking for too much; he only wanted to love his woman as he wanted.

He wondered how he ended up in this part of the world that controlled love and marriages.

Ben stared at the TV; there was a display of two people being electrocuted for flouting the matchmaking law.
