Chapter 20

My heart raced as I felt my body press against his. How had this happened?

Seconds ago, I could barely handle our hands touching and now I was practically lying on top of him. Could he feel my heart pounding? I wasn’t sure how he couldn’t.

“Look, Fi.” He pushed some of my hair out of his face and pointed up at the ceiling. “Doesn’t it look like water?”

“Yes.” I breathed the word, unable to speak any louder. The shifting colors on the ceiling did allow me to relax a little. I noticed that his hand lingered on my shoulder, not far from my cheek. His other arm draped lazily across my stomach. I could feel the tickle of his breath along the curve of my neck.

He’d confided something in me, he’d shared a special place with me, and all I could focus on was his skin against mine, the brush of his chin against my hair as he shifted his head, the way his arm tightened just a little around me when the fish spun.

Please, Sophie. I closed my eyes tight. Please, don’t let yourself get carried away.

As the ride came to a stop, I felt him shift under me, but his arm remained around me.

“Did you like it?” He sat forward some, so that his lips hovered not far from my ear.

I nodded, unable to speak as my mind spun with the effects of his warmth wrapped around me.

“Sophie?” He pulled some hair away from my face and sat up straighter.

I suddenly became aware that he was likely waiting for me to get up. I twisted in his grasp in an attempt to get to my feet, but my foot slid on the edge of the fish and I only succeeded in falling back toward him—only this time, we were face-to-face.

“Easy.” He caught me as he smiled and looked up into my eyes. “You don’t have to hurry.”

With our lips inches apart, I felt that odd rush that I’d had on the first day that I’d looked into his eyes. It was more than just excitement. It wasn’t quite desperation. It was a deep need, like a thirst that I would do anything to quench.

I felt frozen by the moment, as if all time had stopped and I had no idea how to get it moving again.

Then his fingertips caressed the curve of my cheek and my heart jolted back to life in a frenzy of beats. He lifted his head and his lips neared mine. I watched the journey in slow motion, knowing that with each millisecond that passed they came closer.

Just before our lips might have collided, I turned my head to the side.

It was just a fantasy. He wasn’t trying to kiss me, he was trying to get up and I was in his way.

With my mind focused on this, I pulled away from him and stood up. “Thanks, Wes, that was a lot of fun.” I looked at the ceiling instead of him.

He was silent as he got to his feet.
