Chapter 17
I tilted my head to one side, then the other, unsure if I was really seeing the smudges clearly. “Guys, you need to see this,” I called over my shoulder.
“What?” Jackson asked from the covert opening in the wall behind me.
“I think Sully left us a note.”
The tunnel was abruptly abandoned as both men quickly joined me and began tilting their heads as well. I flashed back to the meeting with the President the day before. I need someone who is unencumbered by outside influences and has an unbiased view of the situation. Had he known there was a traitor in the group?
“I don’t believe it,” Jackson declared. “How could he…” he trailed off, not wanting to say the words out loud.
“All of our info came from him,” I reminded them. “It was his contact with the Bumbles. He surveyed the Castro house. Zaid was his guy on the inside at the palace. He could have told us anything he wanted.”
Tank was nodding now. “He’s right. We know his info on Evan was wrong. Hell, not only is Sam not a Nazi, he’s Committee. What are the odds of that?”
As we pondered the question, Sam returned to the basement and found us still staring at the blood smears. “Is that what I think it is?” he asked, breaking us out of our trance. Our silence confirmed his suspicion. “But what’s with the clubs?” he asked.
“It’s a clover,” Tank corrected. “The missing member of our group is affectionately known as ‘Mickey’, because he looks Irish.”
“So, the recovery mission has become a man hunt,” Jackson sighed. Mickey was now a marked man, and Jackson and Tank had just lost two of their closest friends within a couple hours. I couldn’t imagine what was going through their minds.
“There is one other possibility we must consider,” Sam offered. “What if Sully was the traitor? Mickey found out, shot him, and Sully smeared the note to throw us off.”
“No,” Tank shook his head, “not Sully.”
“I’m just saying it’s possible.”
“No, it’s not,” Tank insisted.
“Well, either way we’ve got to find Mickey,” I interrupted. Arguing about it wasn’t going to solve anything.
Tank sighed and glanced somberly up toward the cremation in progress above us. “If it’s alright with everyone, I think we ought to say a few words for Sully first.”
No one objected, and Jackson offered to go first. “We all know Sully was dedicated to his service and to his country. He was a good man and a great leader. He committed no sin and did not deserve this ending. Sorry we couldn’t give you a proper burial, boss. But know that we’re gonna get the traitor. Justice will be served.” Jackson looked to me, and I cleared my throat as I searched for the right words.
“I only just met Sully yesterday, but I already considered him a friend. He was accepting and patient with me, quickly dismissing my moments of doubt. He will be missed, both as a leader and a friend.” I looked to Tank, who briefly bowed his head and made the sign of the cross on his chest.
