Chapter 11: We Find The Evidence
“Well, what now, Viejo?”
I looked at Juan with growing annoyance, then just gave up and shook my head, “You have a real problem with that age thing, don’t you? I’m only 62, I’m not old.”
“Oh, you’re old. I’m just 18. You’re more than three times my age. Believe me, when you’re just 18 – 62 is old. No disrespect, though.”
I nodded dubiously at that, but allowed my annoyance slip away. We had more serious things to consider now, most notably what we were going to do about Joseph Adler’s murder? Should we step out of it like the cops had told us? It’s what they wanted. Or ignore them and go full steam ahead? With all that could mean. I know Juan was all for going full speed ahead on this. At the moment I was unsure of exactly how I felt. Everything seemed so complex, and confusing, we needed some solid leads.
“So what do you think?” Juan asked me, sitting on the stool behind the back counter, with my old cash register in front of him. My store was open for business, but there were no customers. Juan and I were alone and we felt very alone.
“I don’t know. Adler was definitely murdered, but those two cops… They give me the creeps. The autopsy report and cause of death make it all look legit.”
“Look legit?” Juan offered with a smirk, “Yeah, well… someone got to someone.”
“You think so?” I asked, and I had to admit I had the same uneasy feeling.
“Bought off cops?” Juan asked me, nodding, apparently pretty sure of the fact, and I could see he didn’t like the two cops one bit either.
I sighed, I didn’t like them at all, but, I said, “I’m not sure about them. They may just be taking the course of least resistance. They see Adler as just another dead junkie, no one cares about a junkie murder. They want it out of the way. No one cares. They don’t care.”
“People care, Viejo. You and I care. That old couple cares,” Juan reminded me. “Even Andrea Tatos cares.”
“Yes, that is true, but no one else does. Not those cops. No one that really matters. And those cops seem to be much too interested in us…”
Juan nodded sadly acknowledging that truth, then changing the subject, “So what about Charles St. Simon?”
“Now he’s a different kettle of fish altogether. Did you see his face when we mentioned the tin dispatch box? I agree with you now that he was scared, Juan – a big-time criminal like him – and he was really scared.”
“Yeah, you think there’s gold in that box, or cash? Maybe diamonds or jewelry? I mean, there’s gotta be something very valuable in there… Maybe some kind of important papers or sex photos maybe? Nudes? You know, stuff like that like for blackmail?”
“I don’t know, we’re just guessing. St. Simon’s got all the money he needs, and his type are always greedy for more – but I didn’t see greed in his face.
