Britt spotted his cousin, Sheriff Maggie Kingston, cruising down Main Street and signaled for her to pull over.

Sprinting across the road, he waited for her to roll down the window. “Busy?”

“I’m on my way to see Grif,” she said.

“Mind if we ride and talk?”

“Hop in.”

Once he settled into the passenger seat and the vehicle was on its way, she asked, “What’s up?”

“I have an odd request.”

“After the last few years, odd no longer applies to our two families.”

“No one can argue that fact.”

“Before we get into your question,” Maggie said, “how are the benefit preparations going?”

“They were going pretty well until some of the gift baskets disappeared.”

“Stolen or misplaced?”

“Stolen.”

“How many?”

“Enough to irritate the hell out of me.”

“Is that why you flagged me down?”

“Yes and no.”

“You’ve got five minutes before we reach our destination.”

Britt filled her in on the thefts and their interview with Robbins kids.

“You spoke to the kids without an adult present?”

He gave his cousin a sideways glance. “I already heard it from Randi.”

“What do you need from me?”

“Whatever information you can get for me on the Robbins family.”

“What do you hope to uncover?”

“I’m not sure.”

Something in the Robbins apartment had felt vaguely familiar to Britt. He couldn’t quite put his finger on the connection, but he would.

Maggie pulled into a parking lot and he noticed his brother, Grif, decked out in an expensive black leather coat and gray dress slacks, standing with two other suits. “Big meeting?”

“You know Grif, always wheeling and dealing.”

“Thanks for the help, Maggie. I owe you one.”

“You owe me a dozen,” she pushed open her door and made to exit, “but who’s counting?”

He gave her ponytail a sharp tweak before jumping out of her vehicle. Retribution sizzled in her brown eyes as she glared at him over the squad’s hood.

“Am I interrupting something?” Grif asked, joining them.

“Only your brother’s death.”

“In that case, maybe I should come back in five minutes.”

“Prick.”

Grif grinned. “What brings you here? A burning interest in capital investments?”

Sometimes it amazed him that he and Grif had come out of the same womb.

“Just spending some quality time with my favorite cousin.”

Maggie snorted.

“I’ll let you get back to business.” Britt turned back toward town.

“You’re going to walk?” Grif asked.

“It’s only a couple of miles.”

Grif dug into his pocket and held out his keys. “Take mine, and I’ll hitch a ride back with Maggie.”

Britt saw the emblem on the key fob and glanced around the parking lot, confirming his suspicion. “Um, no thanks.”

Grif lowered his hand. “It’s a minivan, not a pink Cadillac.”

“I’d rather drive the Caddy.”

“One day, you and Randi will have a few rug rats running around, and you’ll appreciate my choice of transportation.”

Britt shook his head. “I have three letters for you, bro. S-U-V.” Shoving his hands into his front pockets, he strode away.

“Hey,” Grif called.

“I’m not taking your damn minivan.”

“Mom mentioned some of the Blackwells would be at the pre-event prep dinner.”

Maggie moaned.

Every year, his Kingston cousins held a holiday festival at their farm. Family members who helped out with the event were treated to an amazing dinner beforehand.
