A LITTLE CRAZY
Misunderstandings in Stilwell
âWhere do you suppose all that money went?â Sarah lifted the pencil from the page of the recipe book and touched the blunt end against her lips in contemplation.
Ned shrugged, while Frank thought out loud, âMaybe south.â
âWhy south?â quizzed Sarah.
âJust guessing because it hasnât turned up in Kansas.â
Sarah was now tapping the end of the pencil against her cheek. âIt couldnât just disappear. Money just doesnât disappear. It has to go somewhere.â
âAre you sure of that? It seems to disappear when I spend it,â said Frank.
âHow do you spend that much?â contemplated Sarah. âAnd if you had all that money, what would you spend it on?â
Ned went to respond, but Frank beat him to the punch. âBuy a property, get some horses, maybe travel a little and never worry about being cold or hungry.â Frank looked at Sarah. âWhat about you?â
Sarah raised her eyes to the ceiling as if looking for the answer and repeated the question. âIf I had all the money I wanted, and then some?â
âYes,â urged Frank, waiting.
âI would buy a piano,â said Sarah with consideration.
âA piano, is that all?â It was said to show disappointment in her grand desire.
But Sarah hadnât finished. She stopped examining the ceiling and said, âAnd a parlour to put it in. A big one, attached to a brand new house.â
Sarahâs answer tickled Frank so much that he couldnât stop cackling, while saying, âA piano, a parlour, and a new house,â Then he said, âI didnât know you could play the piano.â
âI canât, but I would learn.â
âAnd what would you do then?â
âGive recitals.â
âWho to?â
Ned watched this banter going back and forward between Sarah and Frank with close interest.
âThe Kennedys, the Ballards and the Boettichers. Oh, how I would love to show up the Boettichers with some fancy piano playing in my fancy new parlour.â
âThe Boettichers donât live here any more, do they?â said Frank. âDidnât they move to Paola a real long time ago?â
âFifteen years ago, but Iâd go and get them from Paola,â said Sarah with a smile. âJust to show them that I had made good.â
âI didnât think you were that kind of person, Sarah Lennon,â said Frank.
âAnd what kind would that be? The show off kind?â
Frank nodded. âMaybe I just donât know you well enough.â
âFrank, itâs not only me that you donât know well enough. You donât know women at all and itâs probably time you got some schooling.â
âFrom where?â
âDoes it matter where? As long as it is from a woman.â
âWhat are you suggesting, a mail order bride?â
âNo, that would be foolish. It is only with proper courting that your head will finally speak louder than your heart.â
âWhat is proper courting?â
âWhere you really get to know someone and decide if you can trust them, especially with money.â
Frank was feeling a little uneasy with the conversation. Marriage was not for him.
âI know one thing,â he said. âI need you to teach me how you cook.â
âNow why would you want me to teach you to cook?â
âSo that I can learn how you think.
