Chapter 7
Lex
The rest of the night was spent in a hushed conversation. The hours slipped by, with little to mark when they had passed, but Philip and Lex kept on talking. Planning took more than she thought it would because with every suggestion she made, he would bring up something that was sure to set it for failure.
Running away? Iâd be shot and you would be caught, or at the very least, it might take too long to do it.
Driving away in the van? There are trackers. They would be on us the moment they noticed movement they didnât authorize.
Pretend like I died? They would put a bullet in your head to make sure of it.
Pretending that Kirk Johnson had died? They would put a bullet in his head and then kill you to make sure there were no witnesses.
It took hours to work out a plan that would even be remotely possible, with Lex, Philip, and Johnson all coming out of it alive. Already, the chances of them surviving the night seemed pretty slim. It all depended on Kirk Johnson, and whether or not he survived. If he lived, that was fine, but it would make escaping incredibly difficult. If he died, it would be easier to escape, but the Mafia would be hot on their tails, with no hesitation in killing them.
By the time that morning came, it seemed that they had a strategy that suited both of them: Lexâs rigid moral compass and Philipâs strong survival instincts. It was still not a guaranteed success, but Lex was willing to die for Johnsonâs sake, and Philip had already decided that this was his last chance at getting a life worth living, regardless. They both knew why the other person was doing it, but talking about it would only make it more painful.
So, they were quiet. The next few days would have to be spent in silence, with their only conversations happening at night.
When the morning came, Philip stood up, stretching the ache out from his shoulders and looked down at her with a pained look. He always seemed to be in pain now. There must be so much going on in his mind now, but she was glad they had a plot.
At least having an intent was like a silent promise that he would live long enough to try and see it through.
âWe have to wait until the time is right. And itâs not right now. Since we just kidnapped him, people are sure to be out looking for us, from both sides. We have eyes on us, even if we think weâre all alone.â Those were Philipâs words, when the sun had just started to rise. It gave her some hope that she had bought them all some time, and she felt the tension fall from her shoulders.
As long as Philip kept on living, and he could get some supplies for her to keep Kirk stable, they would be fine. It would just take a few days, and then she would be safe again.
