After weeks of utter silence, Anna’s cell phone is suddenly ringing off the hook Monday morning. Clara from the Jaycees: “Just wondering if you plan to participate in the annual rummage sale Anna?” The sale wasn’t scheduled for another three months. Bernice from the Temple Academy Mother’s group: “Anna were you planning on selling raffle tickets as usual?” On and on, almost a dozen such calls on such pretexts fill her voice mail.

The only call Anna answers for the moment is from Janet; “Hey girl…you disappeared off the grid. Everything OK? Have anything you want to share with your best and oldest friend about your weekend?”

Truth was Anna wanted information about Carlo, and she knew Janet would know or could track it down in a short order. “Exactly how old is he Janet? Is he involved with anyone?”

“Wait, wait a minute,” Janet stops her. “Why don’t you tell me what happened this weekend? It’s all over town that you ran off with Carlo you know.”

“Ahhh,” answers Anna. “That explains the sudden resurgence of interest in my well-being from among my good friends. You know the ones who ignored me at the Governor’s Ball.”

“What do you mean?” asks Janet.

“I mean suddenly I’m popular again. I got almost a dozen messages from women I thought were my friends, despite the fact that they ignored me for the past three months. Now all of a sudden I’m a hot commodity.”

“Yeah, I guess the word is out,” Janet adds. “Everyone wants to know the skinny. Maybe they just want to know if they can take aim at Erik for themselves. Some of them, at least. You’d think they could manage to be just slightly less obvious though.”

“Well I don’t have time for them just now,” Anna assures Janet. “I’m going to talk to Stanhope. He should be able to do something about the kids not coming for visitation. Shouldn’t he?”

“You go get ‘em girl. If anyone will know, it will be him. Let’s get together later to…”

“OK. OK great, you come here for dinner will you? Do you know how long it’s been since I had anyone to cook for?” Anna insists.

“Oh Anna!” Anna can just see Janet rolling her eyes. “Fine, but don’t let it be too fattening,” Janet chides her. “I won’t escape this office until about six this evening. But by then I’ll be armed with the information you’ve requested madam.”
