Chapter Twenty

After leaving Dean in the back yard, Camden hurried up to her room and quietly closed the door, leaning against it with a big exhalation. The house was quiet. Daisy and Sophie haf gone to bed hours ago.

She touched her lips with shaking fingers. Dean’s unexpected kiss had met all her childish dreams of what a kiss should be. Hot and hungry. Electrifying. Unfortunately, she only had Johnny to compare it to. Maybe most men kissed like Dean. Johnny had been all business when it came to sex, saving all his passion for his motorcycles.

Thank heavens Dean had no inkling of the effect he had on her. She’d almost swallowed her tongue when he appeared in the kitchen earlier that night to kiss Sophie before leaving for his date.

His lean, muscular body looked good in everything–his khaki sheriff’s uniform, worn jeans and chambray shirt, even the sweatpants and tee shirt he’d worn down to the kitchen on his morning off. Dressed in a suit the man looked like Master of the Universe.

She had felt a twinge of jealousy when she saw him dressed up, knowing that the unknown Laurie was going to benefit from all that sexy man while Camden made do with a game of kickball with Dean’s mother and daughter.

Not that she had minded the kickball game. She honestly liked spending time with Daisy Wester and had grown quite attached to Sophie. The little girl made her yearn for children of her own. Unfortunately she needed a man in her life before she could make children.

Johnny had been adamant about not having children, something she had let slide for a number of reasons, but mainly because she finally had someone to call her own and she didn’t want to rock the boat. If she had pressed the issue, Johnny would have left her.

It had been easy for her to ignore the limitations of their relationship when she was caught up in the planning for their big cross country trip. Somewhere in the back of her mind she had convinced herself that Johnny would eventually come around to her way of thinking and want a family with her, despite the fact that he had been upfront right from the start that he would never marry her and they would never have children together.

What a fool she’d been to think he would change.

Camden left the light off and crossed her room to look out the window at the back yard. Dean was still sitting beneath the tree, his long legs stretched out in front of him, his white shirt reflecting the light from the kitchen.

Now that she was able to look at her relationship with Johnny with clear eyes, she saw that she had found it easy to set aside her desire for a family because being with Johnny helped banish a lifetime of loneliness.

Would she have eventually left him? She’d never know. He had died before she got the chance to find out, but she felt fairly certain
