CHAPTER 7

The Death in the Cells

One spring day in 1983, Kelly and his friend and fellow vagrant, Paul McManus, decided to go down to Clapham Common and enjoy a quiet drink in the sun. They settled on a park bench not far from the Old Town in Clapham; there were a lot of people around as Clapham town centre is nearby. The only problem was that neither Kelly nor McManus had any money and it is difficult to get a drink without it.

Kelly gave the situation some thought. He saw a 65-year old man sitting on the next bench. This man was minding his own business and had come to Clapham Common to enjoy a drink himself. Recently retired after half a century of hard labour, he had taken to sleeping in until 11 am and then taking a slow walk to the Common for a single pint of beer, before returning home for lunch.

Kelly told McManus to stay where he was and that he would sort out some money for a drink. Kelly then went across and joined the 65-year-old on his bench. Kelly solicited the man for sex and the man, outraged, rejected him. (This is the only part of the entire story that Kelly denied. He vigorously refused to admit ever soliciting any man, although several men independently accused him of doing so).

Kelly then admired the man’s ring and asked for it. The man explained that this was his wedding ring and that he did not propose to give it away. Kelly admired the man’s watch and the man told him to go away, checking for any local policemen as he did so, as he started to worry about the situation in which he now found himself. Kelly then made clear that the consequences of failing to hand over the ring and watch would be violence and the man reluctantly handed the items over to Kelly, who then took them over to Paul McManus to show them off.

This was a bad move, because as he did so, the man found two very young policemen walking across the common in their brand new uniforms. The two officers were in their first week of solo patrolling. They had left Hendon Training School and come to Clapham, where they had gone out on supervised patrol for two weeks, but this was their first week of patrolling alone.

The old man told them what had happened and Kelly and McManus were quickly stopped, searched and questioned. The officers took the two men round the back of some trees for privacy and searched them both, but found nothing. They questioned Kelly and McManus closely, to the best of their ability, but Kelly and McManus had been around this world far too long to admit anything. The man remained adamant that they had just taken his ring and his watch. The officers considered their options; checks on their personal radios had shown that Kelly and McManus were well known to the Police as regular
