Theyâd shared a simple dinner, a quick and easy stir fry Devlin had thrown together. Cooking wasnât his hobby, but he was proficient enough in the kitchen to make decent and healthy meals. After they were done eating, Devlin had asked one question after the other, and Phex had answered them all, showing no resistance whatsoever. Now he was exhausted to the point of numbness, and it worried Devlin. âAre you tired, sweetheart?â
âYes, Daddy.â
âThen letâs get you in bed.â
âYes, Daddy.â
Brushing their teeth together felt surprisingly intimate, both of them only wearing underwear. âYou donât have to go to bed just âcause I am tired,â Phex said, but his protest sounded weak.
Devlin merely smiled at him. âI think we both know better, donât we?â
Phex sighed. âYes, Daddy.â
They crawled into bed, Devlin barely able to keep back a moan when he settled onto the mattress. It was like being hugged by clouds, so soft. He held out his arm, and after a brief hesitation, Phex cuddled close, his head on Devlinâs shoulder, his eyes already closed. âMmm, thereâs a good boy. Now, remember, we want to get back into a rhythm, so Iâve set the alarm at six, okay?â
âMmm.â
âGo to sleep, sweetheart. Daddy is here.â
Phex let out a sighâ¦and fell asleep. Within minutes, his breathing became slow and deep, signaling he was truly under. If he fell asleep this easily, what had he been talking about when heâd mentioned having sleeping issues? Something Devlin had forgotten to ask about. He put it on his mental list for the next day, then took a moment to revel in the warm feeling inside him at sharing a bed with someone again. And not just anyone. His sweet boy, his Phex. His Mikey. He fell asleep with a smile on his face.
He was awake before the alarm went offâas usual. Years of waking up at six had conditioned his body, and he only set an alarm as a safety precaution. Phex was still asleep. He was also still in Devlinâs arms, a leg slid between Devlinâs and his hand splayed across Devlinâs chest while his head rested on Devlinâs shoulder. Even in his sleep, Phex wanted to be close to him, and Devlin considered that a good sign.
When the alarm went off, Phex blinked. âWhatisthat?â he mumbled sleepily.
âTime to wake up, my sweet boy.â
Phex groaned. âDonât wanna. Sleeping was niceâ¦comfortable. Donât wanna get up.â
Devlin grinned. âSorry, sweetheart. Not an option.â
He rudely whipped the covers off, laughing when Phex groaned even harder. âDaddy!â
Devlin gently pushed Phex off him. âCome on, baby boy. Up you go. Time for a swim.â
That made Phex open his eyes. âA swim?â
âYes. Twenty minutes of swimming, then a shower, and then breakfast. Letâs go.â
Grumbling, Phex climbed out of bed, did his business in the bathroom, then made his way outside. Devlin watched him as he stripped out of his underwear and dove into the pool, settling into a good rhythm as he swam lap after lap. Good. He needed the exercise, and even better when he got it in first thing in the morning.
