Later that night
There was no way he was getting Clyde and Andy out of his room once theyâd gotten a few beers in their systems. Why do grown men revert to frat boys whenever alcohol is involved? he wondered. Heâd indulged in one beer, but that was it. He couldnât stop thinking about Angelia and how soft and lonely her voice sounded.
He might have been reading into the lonely part, but he couldnât deny a hope that she missed him as much as he missed her.
âSo what is going on with you and that woman, anyway?â Andy asked, slapping him on the back. âCome on, man, nowâs your chance to spill your guts. We probably wonât remember in the morning anyway.â
âNothingâs going on. She lives in New York,â he answered firmly, hoping to put an end to that line of questioning.
âSheâs the one who lost her son in a school shooting, right?â Clyde asked.
Mark nodded. He didnât want to talk about it with them. Or anyone, for that matter. Even his mother had asked him a week or so ago if he was seeing anyone. It was like his feelings were written all over his face, no matter how carefully he tried to conceal them.
âOh, sounds like kismet to me,â Andy pointed out.
ââKismetâ?â Clyde repeated. âWhat the hell kind of word is that?â
âI think itâs fate that you guys met,â Andy answered, ignoring Clydeâs furrowed brow and wrinkled nose at the unfamiliar vocabulary word.
Mark shrugged. âDoesnât do much good if weâre thousands of miles away. Plus, she doesnât get this whole Second Amendment thing. She is on the totally opposite side of the gun debate.â
âWho cares?â Clyde stomped his foot. âIâm so damn sick of the polarization in this country. Weâre all Americans! Itâs okay to have different opinions. We live in a fuckinâ democracy, for fuckâs sake!â
âShhh!â Mark warned. His friendâs voice was so loud he was sure they were going to get calls from the front desk asking them to knock it off.
âHeâs right, though,â Andy agreed, nodding emphatically.
Mark sighed and looked at the clock on the nightstand again. It was already one in the morning, so too late to call Angelia back. Heâd have to settle on a text. He fired off a couple of quick thoughts and returned his phone to his pocket before his attention shifted to his friends. âOkay, you guys want to head back to your rooms? Weâre leaving at eight AM tomorrow, right?â
âFine, fine,â Andy said. âCome on, letâs head out.â
âFine, but Iâm taking the rest of the beer with me,â Clyde protested.
âGood, please do!â Mark couldnât help but smile. Despite their regression when drunk, he felt lucky to have two good friends like Clyde and Andy. Besides his mom, dad and sister, those two were the only ones he spoke to outside of work and TRA meetings. His world had gotten way too small since he lost Ashleigh. Way too small.
