IT WAS A sunny morning, not that the light made this any easier. She'd been up until after three with Harrison and then tossed and turned for the rest of the night.
But this needed to be done, this conversation had to happen, and it needed to be sooner rather than later.
It was, Alice thought as she climbed out of her car, a dangerous conversation to be having. She had no intention of lying, she couldn't do that, not to Viv. But she needed to keep this job, she couldn't get fired, not right now, she needed that pay check.
Being an adult sucked, she thought sourly, as she walked up the two steps to the door.
âOh,â Viv said when she opened the door. âI, uh, I wasn't... You're early and, um...â
Her cheeks had turned red and she couldn't look Alice in the eye. Which made Alice want to hold her and tell her that everything was going to be alright, which obviously, would be counter-productive at this point.
She cleared her throat. âViv, can I come in? Can we talk?â
âUh, yeah, sure, I, um, coffee?â
She weighed up the chances of Viv tossing the coffee at her when she said what needed to be said and decided that she'd survive it, especially if Viv continued not looking at her. âYes, please.â
Max was lapping at water in his bowl as they walked through to the kitchen. Alice pulled out a high chair from the island and sat down as Viv flicked the coffee machine on.
âWe need to talk,â she said. Great opener. She took a breath. âFirst, I, um, I don't want you to feel bad about last night. I certainly don't. It was fantastic and wonderful and I wanted what happened to happen just as much as you did.â
Viv poured coffee, passed a cup over, then leaned on the counter with her elbows. âAnd yet I feel like I'm being dumped, why is that?â There were shadows under her eyes that looked like bruises.
Alice sighed and looked down into her cup. âLook, this isn't appropriate. I'm your life coach. I'm supposed to be here teaching you to be happy, it would be an abuse of my position to expect any more than that.â
âWhat if kissing you is what makes me happy?â Viv countered, leaning down further.
Alice could see her cleavage, could see the roundness of the top of her breasts as she leaned and a shot of heat went through her core. She gritted her teeth. âViv, you know what I'm saying here. You're in a vulnerable position.â
âI absolutely am not, I feel better than I have in months.â
âBut you are. I mean, you are with me. How can I help you if we get entangled together? I know it's not illegal or forbidden or anything else, but it just doesn't seem right.â
Viv looked at her long and hard, then shrugged. âAlright, then I'll fire you.â
Alice blew out a breath. âOkay, I can't let that happen. Not yet. I need this job, Viv.â
âYou're not even a real life coach,â Viv said, standing up straighter.
