John may or may not have been aware of what the track was foretelling, but he did know the song was a prediction of something . He says in Anthology , “‘Revolution 9’ was an unconscious picture of what I actually think will happen when it happens, just like a drawing of a revolution.”

The track also has a direct connection with the occult. Charles Manson, who led his cult followers in a series of murders in the 1960s, claimed that he received secret messages through Beatles songs that were written specifically to direct his actions. The composition that impacted him the most was “Revolution 9.” In the book Helter Skelter , author Vincent Bugliosi, the lead prosecutor in the case against the Mason family, writes that Charles believed The Beatles were prophets who were looking for Jesus Christ, and that he was the Christ they were looking for. “Almost every song in [the White Album] had a hidden meaning, which Manson interpreted for his followers,” Bugliosi writes. This was especially the case with “Revolution 9.” In one part of the song, John screams “right.” Manson misheard the word as “rise,” and interpreted it as an incitement to the black community to rise against the white middle class. “Rise” became one of Manson’s key phrases found painted in blood at one of his murder scenes.
