Chapter 31

“Is this the part when the dam breaks and we tell all the horrible complicated things of our pasts?” she said.

They had moved to the wall side of the bed. “If we want. We can tell the good stuff.”

She smiled.

“There are nice things,” she said.

“Like what?”

“Like a trip we took to Portugal. Like sixth grade.”

“Only sixth grade?”

“Tenth grade was good too.”

And as she talked on she saw specific images: her Yamaha stereo, a bottle of suntan lotion, a tan suitcase, a row of scarves in her mother’s closet.

WHAT WAS STRANGE WAS that Jack had become the affair. Turner’s light had thrown darkness over Jack.

He had the right answers for whatever she said.

“I should buck up, roll with things better . . .”

“I certainly can’t.”

“. . . and stop abstracting myself.”

“What would we do sometimes if we couldn’t jump out of a dull conversation into a nice abstraction? I’m a walking abstraction.”

She laughed. “I’m stalled out, always.”

“Most people die waiting for inspiration to descend. You went for it, that’s the important thing. Now you’re second-guessing, as if a little stalling isn’t part of it.”

“It’s not the end of it?”

“No,” he said. “Not even close.”
