âWill you come to stay here then?â Father asked after I explained everything.
âI was leaning that way, yes.â I glanced around the gathering room with the welcoming hearth, the cushioned benches, and wooden armchairs. The oak floors and hand-woven rugs covering them. It was such a warm, friendly environment. Eli and I would be okay if we raised our babies there.
âI hate that theyâre running you off our land.â He scrubbed his palm over his face.
âWell, Father, itâs technically all The Land of Jacob. We are simply the ones to farm those acres,â Pa said with a heavy sigh.
âActually, Pa, I have taken over the payment of taxes on the property.â
Pa gasped. âAnd you didnât tell me?â
âWell, no.â Father hooked his thumbs in his suspenders.
âWhy?â Pa asked, wrinkling up his nose.
âI wanted it to be a surprise. I was going to present Henry with the deed to the farm when he had found someone to start a family with, and sometimes â¦â
âSometimes Iâm just an omega and canât be trusted.â
Fatherâs eyes widened. âNo, no, gosh, no. Thatâs not it. Not at all. Bishop Swallow said I was not to tell anyone, including you.â
Pa huffed and crossed his arms over his chest. Father leaned over, rubbing him on the back.
âSo, the bishop knew, gave you the deed, but still kept taking most of my farmerâs market profits to put toward taxes?â I wanted to say I was surprised, but now that I knew what he was capable of, it wasnât really all that surprising.
Father nodded. âSounds correct.â
âThat seems un-Christ-like.â Bishop Swallow had standards in regard to everyone else in The Land of Jacob besides himself, it seemed.
âIt does. It would be smart of you to move here, Henry. What theyâve done to you already is a crime,â Father said.
âI accepted it at the time because of my sins.â
âNobody should be beaten for their sins. They are to repent. Make it up to the Lord and Jacob through prayer and forgiveness.â Pa pounded his fist into his palm. It was one of the few times I had ever seen him so angry.
âThe Book of Jacob says that sinners should be punished in a suitable manner that matches their sins.â I pointed out.
âThey are misconstruing the meaning of that passage.â
âI see that now. I see now how a land and people Iâve loved so much can be so wrong about many things.â
âFor my heart aches, how we left you behind,â Pa said, dabbing at his eyes with the end of his apron.
âIâve lived a wonderful life at Rose Creek Acres. I still do, and I hope Eli and I can live a wonderful life here with you, but I worry ⦠What will become of Rose Creek?â
âWe shall sell it,â Father said.
âIs that allowed?â I went over to Pa and embraced him.
âAye, I have the deed.â
âHow did that ever take place anyway?â I asked, shooing Pa off the chair he sat on. He stood, and I sat and patted my knee. He sat down and hugged me around the neck.
