Chapter 17

The Journal of Lady Glynis Wright

April 16, 1821

The Dosza Palace, Buda, Hungary

I have not spoken to Ignatius since that moment in the hallway. I left him there, returning home with Adem and Magda in the carriage. I did not see him when he finally ventured into the palace and took residence in the rooms that were supposedly his all along. He has not approached me, and I have not sought him out.

Is it possible to cry myself into the grave? I have wept so hard these last few nights that my face and chest are stained with blood. When Magda came to me the night I discovered the truth, and implored me to speak to Ignatius, I refused. Instead, I curled upon my bed with my head in her lap listening to her heartbeat as I sobbed and she stroked my hair. I fell asleep with her fingers combing through my locks.

Yesterday it was Laura who came, demanding that I get up and feed and stop making a mess of it all. I listened to her argue that I am being obtuse and must speak to Ignatius, but I pulled the covers over my head and ignored her. Again, Magda came and comforted me until I slept.

Now a new night is upon me and I scribble in my journal beneath the covers as Adem stands over the bed demanding that I rise. I wish they’d all let me be.

If my love is not true, what point is there? Ignatius has been my solace in all this grief, blood, pain, and darkness. If what I feel for him is merely the result of a union of blood, then I am a fool that is doomed to lose in the end.

I wonder how long it shall take to waste away to bones and -
