Bike Hire

Keswick Mountain Bikes (017687-75202; www.keswickbikes.co.uk; 9am-5.30pm Mon-Sat, 10am-5.30pm Sun) The town’s largest bike shop has three outlets: a workshop and hire centre near the Climbing Wall, a retail shop on Otley Rd, and another shop above the Lakeland Pedlar. Bike hire costs £15 to £40 per day depending on the model.

Bus

Useful buses:

555 Hourly to Ambleside (40 minutes), Windermere (50 minutes) and Kendal (1½ hours).

X5/X50 (hourly Monday to Saturday, six on Sunday) East–west route that stops in Workington, Cockermouth and Keswick, then becomes the X50 to Threlkeld and Penrith.

77/77A (four daily in summer) Main bus to Borrowdale and Buttermere. The 77 goes in an anticlockwise direction via Whinlatter, Lorton, Buttermere, Honister Pass and the Borrowdale hamlets, then runs along the west side of Derwentwater through Portinscale and back to Keswick. The 77A does the same route in a clockwise direction.

78 (twice-hourly Monday to Saturday, eight on Sunday) Runs down east-side Derwentwater via Lodore Falls (10 minutes), Grange (15 minutes), Rosthwaite (20 minutes) and Seatoller (25 minutes).
