When next Adam saw her he asked :

“ How did it all come about ? ”

She explained simply, sweetly, and seeming to say what she could in the man’s favour, but doubly damning him whilst she did so.

“ Perhaps you have noticed—of course, I do not blame if you have not; men are not supposed to remember such trivial things—a fur collar I occasionally wear—or rather wore, it is now.
