Chapter Twenty-two
The dishes were in the dishwasher, the table cleared, and Portia was back on the beanbag chair, softly chatting to her teddy as her eyes drifted shut. Leslie refilled Kateâs wine glass and made herself a cup of green tea before she settled next to her on the couch.
âThanks for the great dinner,â Kate said. âIâm going to have to get back into the habit of cooking again now that I wonât have Martaâs help.â
âYouâre welcome anytime, but I admit I rarely cook. I usually eat at work or with my mom and dad. This was a nice change.â Leslie clutched her mug afraid if she set it down, sheâd pull Kate into her arms. âIs Portia going out for Halloween this year?â
Kate groaned. âI suppose sheâll want to. She was a little too young last year, but her cousins have been chattering about it already so sheâs aware of it.â
âYouâre welcome to bring her to the restaurant. We all dress up and have special treats for the kids. My mom loves it.â She hesitated, wondering if she was being pushy. âIn fact, I have a pumpkin I saved for Portia to help carve.â
Kate smiled. âThanks, thatâs incredibly sweet. She hasnât carved one yet. I doubt my nephews would be interested in having a little girl following them on Halloween, either. I know sheâd love a pumpkin, but I think her toy box project was enough for tonight.â
âCome back tomorrow?â Leslie knew she was pushing but couldnât seem to stop.
âMaybe. Iâll let you know. I have a television being delivered sometime after four.â Kate finished her wine and took her glass to the kitchen. âDo you mind if I make a cup of tea?â
Leslie sprang off the couch. âYou relax. Iâll get you one.â She stood close to Kate in the kitchen aware Portia was engrossed in play in the living room. She caught her slight grin before Kate pinned her against the counter and pressed her lips to hers.
âIâve wanted to do that since we got here.â Kate leaned away and spoke softly.
Leslie gave in to her need to feel Kate. She wrapped her arms around her and held her tightly against her. She brushed her lips over her neck grateful for the counter holding her up when Kate tipped her head back in supplication. She nuzzled and kissed, careful not to leave any marks. Kateâs whimpers fueled her desire, but the small voice filtering into her lust-filled brain broke their connection.
âMommy?â
Kate stepped back and Leslie wanted to know if the blush across her cheeks and neck extended over her breasts.
âRight here, honey.â Kate gave her a small smile and shrugged slightly before putting more distance between them. She let Portia lead her from the kitchen.
Kate and Portia were rolling off the beanbag chair as if it were a hill when Leslie entered the living room with two cups of tea. She sat and watched for a few minutes while she sipped her tea and wished she were in Portiaâs place.
