THIRTY

CONNIE

Beatrice Amy Hunter was an unexpected surprise. At first – and Connie completely understood why – Ray was suspicious of her announcement when she emerged from the bathroom, her face aglow with hormones and delight, the testing wand still sitting on the edge of the basin. Her hand rested lightly on her belly as she told Ray the news.

‘I’m pregnant.’

Kate and Darby, now aged eight and nearly five, were playing quietly, and the long summer holiday spent by the loch lay ahead for all of them. Ray had taken even more of a step back from the farm these days, handing over much of the day-to-day running to his management team. It had been the right decision and while he was still involved and liked to be out on the land when he could, it had given them more time together as a family – and Connie’s good news was proof of this.

‘Ray, love…’

Ray had glanced up from his newspaper, looking at her in that way she liked where his features softened at the sight of her, as if he really appreciated her. Time had been a good healer. Over the last few years as the girls had grown, his harder edges had been worn away by their innocence and delight in the simple things. Darby loved nature and animals and the outdoors – a chip off her dad’s block, for sure – while Kate was content with a puzzle or a doll or simply trailing Ray around. She’d tried to learn to fish, but hadn’t quite got it, and she could ride a horse, but she wasn’t as good as Darby. And when it came to joining in with the story Ray always read Darby at bedtime, Kate was allowed to sit beside them, but not actually on him like Darby was. She didn’t think he’d ever allow that. But his tolerance of her first daughter was enough for her, and hopefully enough for Kate, to see her through to the time when she’d leave home and either head off to university or start a family of her own. She knew nothing about her past or her biological father, and Connie intended to keep it that way for the rest of her life.

Ray stared at her, and Connie could almost hear the thoughts racing through his mind. ‘The baby is yours. Of course it’s yours, Ray,’ she said, hating that she still had to appease him. It was all she’d ever done, and she had no idea how things would have worked out between them if she hadn’t. Appeasing was her middle name, she’d joked with Margie on one of their walks, not long after she’d found out about the new baby.

‘I’m just scared what will happen if I don’t go along with him, if I tell him what I really think or want or like. He still grills me about where I’ve been when I go out, who I’ve spoken to, checking the mileage on the car. I can’t have an opinion.
