Jessie ducked, letting the twin arms of her assailant close above her. She tried to make a graceful move from ducking into standing and succeeded only in tripping herself up. She landed on her ass, striking the back of her head on the wall with a loud thock. The blow momentarily rattled her, allowing the man to step forward.

Warm me!

If there were ever any doubts about where the stench in the office had come from, those doubts were suddenly exploded. The man who lurched toward her reeked. The sour look on his face made it appear that he was all too aware of this fact. His stomach was open and leaking, and the wound reached all the way to his back and out. She could see the doorway through the hole.

No. It wasn’t that deep. She could see through him. Not just his stomach. Through all of him.

Jessie scurried backward into the corner and raised a foot.

“Get back or I’ll kick your balls across this room!”

Her words only seemed to make the man more anguished. He stepped forward again and Jessie kicked. Her heel hit home and slowed as it passed through the man’s groin.

Unfazed, the man dropped to his knees, arms outstretched like a baby reaching for his mama.

Warm.

As the man tumbled onto her, Jessie scrambled to her feet. Scrambled through him. It was like fighting through pelting rain. The lights sparked and died in counterpoint with another monster thunderclap.

Now behind the intruder, Jessie made for the door. As she opened it, the ghostly man let out a wail. It was heartbreaking and horrible, and all she wanted to do was to drown it out with the sound of the storm.
