“This one’s on me,” Natalie said some time later when the waiter at La Zaragozana brought their bill. “You paid the last time we had dinner together, and I promised to cover it this time.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Reuben told her. “Let me get it.”

“No,” she insisted, pushing his hand away when he reached for the bill. “It’s my treat this time.”

He sat back in his chair and studied her. “Okay, fine. I’ll get it next time.”

“No. We’re even. From now on—”

“From now on?” he asked.

“Nothing,” Natalie concluded, uncertain what she had meant to say in the first place. Something about there not being a next time with him. As she searched in her purse for her wallet, she also tried to reassure herself that their conversation didn’t sound like that of a couple who had dated frequently and intended to keep doing so.

Their dinner tonight had felt like a date, though, she admitted reluctantly as the waiter disappeared with her credit card. She couldn’t imagine why she once again let Reuben talk her into eating out before taking her home. And because most Puerto Ricans dined late—around nine or ten P.M.—she and Reuben were virtually alone in the restaurant upon their arrival. There were few other people for the strolling guitarists to entertain, so the two men returned often to the couple’s table to serenade them. The Mediterranean decor of the establishment was exotic, the Spanish cuisine delicious, and as much as Natalie wished Reuben would behave like a boor, he was nothing but charming and sweet, in spite of their earlier antagonism.

And attractive. Dammit, she wished the man wasn’t so attractive.

She had no idea what it was about him that made him so appealing. He wasn’t especially handsome in a conventional way, and she didn’t agree with him about much of anything. He was considerably older than she, almost the product of a different generation, yet they always found something interesting to talk about. She supposed if she were forced to admit the truth, she would have to confess that she enjoyed more lively conversation with Reuben than she ever did with Nick. Reuben spoke to her differently than her husband did. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but there was something…well, different…about him.

“Let’s go visit Nick tonight,” she said suddenly, as surprised by her suggestion as Reuben seemed to be.

“What? Why? He’s standing watch.”

“But it’s okay to go by and say hello, isn’t it?” she asked. “I mean, his workday is over. He’s probably just sitting around reading or watching TV, right?”

“Unless something’s come up,” Reuben said. “Unless there’s been a SAR or there’s a mechanical problem on the cutter or something.”

“Oh, how often does stuff like that happen?”

“Well, not often, but—”

“So it’s okay to visit him, right?”

“Well, sure, but—”

“He won’t get into any trouble or anything if we’re there, will he?”

“No, but—”

“Then let’s stop by,” she concluded with a smile. “If he’s busy or in the middle of something, we don’t have to stay.
