The Holmes Mania Quotient Test

Sherlock Holmes is, quite possibly, the most popular detective in the world. What is it that makes him so attractive? It has been more than a century since Sherlock Holmes first appeared in Beeton’s Christmas Annual in 1887, and yet, to this day, he remains as popular as ever. While some of the current mania could possibly be attributed to Sherlock, Elementary and Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: Game - Sherlock Holmes has never really been out of the public eye since he rose to fame at the end of the nineteenth century. Most admirers (well, most that I have come across, anyway) of Sherlock Holmes appear to be people who were introduced to him during their pre-teen/teenage years, and have remained captivated for life.

It is a mystery worthy of Sherlock himself - why is he as addictive to the masses as his drug of choice? Is it because he stimulates our minds? Or is it because he appeals at once to the logical and the dramatic sides of us?

A friend of mine once remarked, “You can love him, you can hate him - but you cannot ignore Sherlock Holmes.” How true. He creeps up on you and holds you captive, and you are too fascinated to care.

Once you are his, you belong to him for life. Happily ever after.

The addiction may not be explainable, but the symptoms are easy to recognise. I call it “Holmes Mania”. If you are actually reading this, you probably suffer from some form of Holmes Mania.
