Chapter Fourteen
Looking for Love, Day Four
âYou see that white mark just under his forelock?â the carriage driver explained to Emily, as Troy held her up so she could stretch out her little arms toward one of the two horses attached to the carriage. Her tiny fingertips found the muzzle of the majestic steed in front of them, stroking it slowly.
âThe hair coloring looks like a little heart with an arrow through it,â the driver continued with a smile. âThatâs why we named this guy Cupid. The other one is called Cocoa.â
After a busy evening of retreat housekeeping, client follow-ups, and a last-minute phone interview with a magazine that his team had arranged to appease the press, Troy had carved out an extra slot of family time to spend with Emily between breakfast and his daily seminar, the perfect opportunity to finally make good on his promise to bring his daughter down to meet the horsies and take her on a ride.
Cocoa, Cupid, and Emily had become fast friends, and as their handler indulged Troyâs young daughter with some horse-talk, Troy settled her back on solid ground and snapped a few souvenir photos for himself and his parents.
He chuckled when Emily wrinkled her nose and giggled, her little fingers fluttering through the tuft of hair on the horseâs forehead when the animal lowered his head to be petted. âSoft, huh?â He smiled down at her as her face lit up with delight.
âHello, Mr. Turner.â
Troy turned around at the unfamiliar voice, finding a stately, middle-aged man had walked up behind him. He was fairly sure heâd seen the fellow milling about the retreat this weekâalmost sure. Two hundred and fifty new faces were a lot to remember, even for a people person like him. Though there was something familiar about the stranger beyond that, but he couldnât quite put his finger on just what.
âThe clerks at the front desk told me where I could find you,â the man said.
Troy guided Emily slightly behind him so she could continue to pet the horses, and shook the manâs outstretched hand. âIâm afraid the rides arranged for the retreat were yesterday.â
âOh, Iâm aware. I saw that on the schedule.â
So, he was there for the event. That was one mystery solved.
When the man spoke again, it was with forced nonchalance, as if trying to make it seem like his next words didnât matter to him as much as they did. âYouâve been spending a lot of time with Verona Scott this week.â
Troy eyed him, wondering if the man was a reporter, trying to dig up some dirt on him. Or on her. âDo you know her?â he answered carefully.
A flicker of hesitation passed over the manâs weathered face. âNot as well as Iâd like,â he said at last.
Troyâs protective instincts kicked in. The man was twice her age, at least.
Before he had a chance to dig deeper, he was interrupted by a squeal from Emilyâs direction. âOh! Daddy!â she called out to him. âLook! Cocoa likes
