That afternoon, Emma will tell Angus McLearan that there are no papers. She’ll take him into her grandfather’s study and open every drawer and flip through the row of binders on the bookshelves and open the credenza to show him it’s empty, that she has nothing to share with him. “Surely there’s an archive,” he will say. But, no, she will explain, there isn’t, and she will suggest again that he contact Balfour Chemical. But, disinclined to alienate him, she will not confront him, still unsure of where the truth lies. And, shortly afterwards, he’ll depart in a taxicab. “Headed back to New York,” he’ll say, and he’ll make no promises, nothing about, “I’ll be back in touch or call me if you need me.”

Just before he leaves, there will be a brief awkward moment at the front door where the two of them—Emma and Angus—seem propelled toward one another, toward an embrace of some kind, but they stop themselves. McLearan instead will deliver a firm handshake. And she will watch from the front door as the cab makes its way down the drive not at all sure when she’ll see him again.
