I decided not to bring up Yuriâs admission to having no magic, as it was no worse a secret than that I was a Sjau. As soon as the gobrin gage fell silent, I took over the driving again. It was quiet for a while. Unfortunately, the sky was getting brighter, not darker, and Yuri and I soon had to put our goggles back on.
The road widened and two metal bars that were slightly raised over the ground merged into the road. âIs this for carts?â I asked.
âIt appears to be railroad tracks for a train,â Merlin corrected.
âWhatâs that?â
âIt is like a number of carriages linked together, but much, much larger. And louder. And without the horses pulling it.â
âThat doesnât sound fun to ride in.â
âWhat? Whatâs Merlin saying?â Yuri asked.
âNothing to worry about.â I followed the road, hoping not to meet one of these trains, until Yuri finally told me to stop.
âHeâs here. Or at least the egg is.â
âHow close?â
âNot close enough to be painful, but the voices are loud enough that I can barely hear you over them.â
âCan you understand any of them?â
âNo.â
âWell, well, well!â Zurasâs voice called out. âWe meet---â
âHey, weâre talking here!â Yuri interrupted in an arrogant tone.
âOh, not that again,â I groaned quietly.
Yuri glared at me. âItâs not like I can help it!â
âCanât you channel Merlin or me? Weâre right here.â
âDo you think if I could control who I could channel, it would be him? Or you for that matter? Do you think youâre a fun person to be?â
âIâll wait,â Zuras said meekly. At that point, he stepped out from behind a tree. He looked shorter when he wasnât hovering. He wore goggles, which I suspected were Adelâs. I hated the idea of her being blinded by sunlight because heâd stolen her protection.
âYou stay right there!â Yuri demanded, turning his focus on the sorcerer. âNow Iâm tired of chasing you all over the worlds and itâs going to end here and now.â
âOr what?â
âThat wasnât an ultimatum; that was a fact! Give me the egg and the girl and I wonât hurt you too badly.â
Zuras looked confused. I was just glad it wasnât me who was confused.
âWasnât that an ultimatum?â I asked.
Yuri shot me a glare. âAnd Iâve got something to say to you before this wears off.â
That gave Zuras the chance to get his wits about him. âYou can have the girl, but youâve got to make a choice first.â He pointed down the road, where I could see the tracks split into two different directions. In the left direction, however, there was a gap. There was also a lever in between the split. âThe girl is tied up on the track to the right. The left tracks, which lead to the cliff caves, have been damaged. If the train goes left, it will derail and kill everyone.â He laughed dramatically.
âHow can you know it will kill anyone?â Yuri asked, not showing any concern.
âItâll crash through the cliff and through the engine room!â
âSo?â
âItâll explode!â
âBut that will ruin the mirror you entered through.
