Chapter Thirteen

“Was it good news?” Roger asked in a cheerful voice, edging his horse closer to Henry’s.

Henry had been lost in thought, and his brother’s question drew him from his musings. “To what are you referring?” Of course, he knew very well the object of Roger’s curiosity. The missive he had received before they left had been on his brother’s mind, and now he wanted to know its contents.

Henry was not sure if it was a vice or a virtue, but his brother was continually curious. It had served him well in school, as Roger looked up anything that interested him, and therefore stayed ahead in his lessons. And it made him an excellent lawyer. But on a day-to-day basis, Henry found it irritating. If asked to sign something, Roger read the whole item word for word before casting his signature upon it. If he found a card on a desk, he would pick it up and turn it over, reading everything on it. When Henry received a missive, Roger waited a short while before inquiring of the contents. And Henry usually agreed because … it was Roger. And despite the man wanting to know everything, he loved his brother.

Yet sometimes, to tease, Henry would deliberately play stupid and make Roger ask directly. That seemed to bother Roger, and from Henry’s standpoint, that made them even.

He chuckled at the thought and gave a covert glance at his brother, who was now looking in his direction expectantly.

“Come on, Henry!” Roger said with a sigh. “You know what I am asking about—the letter. Was it good news?”

“You mean, what did it say?” Henry said, giving his brother a playful grin.

“All right. Yes, what did it say?” Roger said, giving a mocking hand gesture of surrender.

“It was from someone with the initials HC. When I questioned Chambers, he said a petite, dark-haired woman with exotic coloring and golden-colored eyes delivered it. Curiously, I noticed he had two letters with the same writing on them. One was addressed to Mother.”

“Ha! And you call me nosey! You are every bit as interested in knowing things as I am, but you pretend otherwise,” Roger asserted.

“I do not believe I am every bit as interested. I would call my interest being observant,” Henry teased.

Roger had a point, though. Henry had ridden this far wondering why his mother had a letter with similar handwriting, being unable to discern who HC was, and thinking that if he knew that, he would have a better idea of the contents of his mother’s missive.

Or would he?

Shaking his head, he laughed. “I don’t know how you do it.”

“Do what?”

“Pursue all the touch points of information about you. I am sitting here mulling over a letter that I did not see, and is none of my business,” he confessed.

“Ah! My curiosity, as you term it, is merely my need to stay informed about what goes on around me …” Roger began.

“If you say so. But we both know it’s more than that.” Henry laughed.
