Chapter Eight

Viktor knew he really shouldn’t, but he couldn’t get over his worry. After Finnegan had hung up on him, he’d paced his hotel room for all of ten minutes before he packed up all his stuff and checked out. Three hours later, the evening full dark, he pulled up outside of a rundown motel ten minutes outside of town.

Viktor registered for a room, paid for several nights up front, and dropped off his stuff. Then, he piled back into his vehicle and headed toward Finnegan’s farm. Instead of going all the way there—he doubted the shifter would appreciate him just dropping in to check up on him—he stopped on the side of the road around a mile away from him.

Climbing out of the vehicle, Viktor locked it up. He swept his gaze over the area. Never had he been so pleased to be blessed to be a vampire. He hazed his vision, which gave him something similar to what he thought infrared would be. If anyone had been around, Viktor knew that they’d see his eyes had turned blood red.

Viktor jogged swiftly through the trees and brush. Before approaching any of the scientists’ suppliers, he’d studied the area, mapping out an escape route, just to be safe. In this case, he used the animal trails he’d noted on aerial maps to make his way to the backside of the farm.

Figuring he was still around a quarter mile away from the farm, Viktor heard the howl of coyotes. He slowed down, judging distance and direction. Getting too close to a pack of wild animals wasn’t really what he wanted to do.

While Viktor knew he could send a number of animals running, he had no desire to kill a bunch of them to get it done.

Peering through the darkness, Viktor continued stealthily forward. He noted the edge of pens first. After that, the movement of both birds and coyotes became apparent. Finally, the wind brought him the heady, metallic scent of Finnegan’s blood.

Viktor crouched behind a bush and focused on his surroundings. He spotted the form of the man he hoped to soon make his lover. Just being so close, scenting him, caused his prick to thicken and his mouth to water.

While Viktor could wait a few more days to feed, being so close to such a sweet-smelling source sure tested his self-control.

As Viktor watched, Finnegan lifted a rifle to his shoulder. The report of the weapon blasted through the still evening. A second later, a loud yip sounded.

Out of the corner of his eye, Viktor noticed a small gray form drop. The other animals galloped around the area, yipping and baying at each other. Unfortunately, they didn’t scatter or flee.

A few seconds later, the crack of the rifle carried to him again. A second animal dropped. That time, the coyotes took off amidst the trees.

Viktor watched, impressed, as Finnegan jogged between pens. He stopped at both downed animals, probably confirming that they were dead. After that, he slowly made his way into the woods after the pack.
