I followed the path to a courtyard and joined a crowd around a languid sow. They hosed it and scrubbed it and trimmed its whiskers. Around its neck they fastened a purple cape with the words noli mi tangere.

We entered a courtroom. The crowd was frenzied. The sow was led down the aisle. One tried to attack the sow, but was restrained by a red-bearded man. All were silenced when a gun was fired upward.

The councilors for the defense were pleased. The sow simply lay on a crate. Once, the magistrate leaned over and spat on its snout. It grunted and rolled its eyes. It followed the proceedings with its idiot gaze, finally falling into a slumber when the village children were called to the stand, declaiming and shaking fists at the defendant. A court guard nudged it awake before the judge read the verdict.
