FULL PATCH

So much had happened during my time as a prospect that it seemed like an entirely different life. I had quickly gotten used to the life—showing up at BeBop’s, taking drugs, moving drugs and serving the full-patch members—that I almost forgot about becoming a member myself. Almost, of course, is the key word there. Although it wasn’t at the front of my mind most of the time, I always knew that membership was my goal and could feel it deep down that it was the direction I was headed in.

I had leapt over the last hurdle the club had put in front of me. Like they’d told me to, I had visited the guys in Thunder Bay and won their respect. Because I had fulfilled all the requirements of membership, my picture was distributed to every Hells Angels chapter in the world. It’s a test to see if anyone anywhere recognized me as a cop or someone who owed money on the street. The club uses it as a fail-safe method to uncover the identities of any infiltrators. Naturally, all I got were green lights.

I knew the vote for my membership was getting closer, so I was very upset when Magic asked me to be in two places at once. I knew that failing at either task would lead to discipline, which would lead to more prospect time. But I had no choice, so I took care of the one task that seemed more important, and—by necessity—let the other one slide.

When church night rolled around, it was warm, so I rode my bike to the clubhouse. That was one of the cool things about the Downtown chapter. We all had money. We all did okay, so we all rode some pretty good bikes. It wasn’t that way at some of the out-of-town chapters. Some of those guys were so broke that if they didn’t have a bunch of supporters, they’d be taking the bus to church.

As usual, the prospects were required to stay outside the actual meeting and stand guard. While I was at my post, a member came down and told me I was needed upstairs. I followed him into the room and was stunned by the silence. Every eye in the whole room was staring at me. Some of the guys looked sincerely pissed off, while the others were almost expressionless.

Now, I have spent my entire career assessing people. When I worked security, my primary instinct was to determine if someone was a friend or foe, and then I had to put everyone I came into contact with into an appropriate category. So as I walked into the room, I was mentally qualifying the look on each guy’s face and calculating what kind of shit I was in.

Surrounded and the complete focus of every face in the room, I was asked why I wasn’t able to complete both tasks I had been given. I pointed out that they were both scheduled for the same time and aggressively replied, “Because there is only one of me.
