CHAPTER 41

Shane put the phone away and rubbed his eyes. Anne Vaughn’s call confirmed all the preliminary data. The murdered girl was raped and beaten, but died from a blow on her head with a heavy object. The killer, it seemed, wasn’t confident she was dead, and threw a rope around her neck. There were no fluids on her body or any other form of evidence and no one stepped forward to identify her. It was strange. She must have been working or going to school. Someone should have noticed her disappearance. Unless she lived alone, didn’t have friends, didn’t work, and was on some kind of break from her college. If no one came forward, the city would have to take care of her burial as they would take care of any homeless or unidentified person. It was horrible, but they didn’t have another choice.

The phone rang again and he heard Parks on the other end. His voice immediately grew hoarse, blood rushed to his genitals.

“Hello Detective Aberson.”

She didn’t flirt and didn’t hint that there was something else between them besides the serial killer. Shane didn’t know if he was glad or disappointed.

“Hello Evangeline.”

“Evangeline?” The woman chuckled. “I didn’t need tongs to pull my name out of you.”

“I …” Shane cleared his throat. His voice refused to support him. “I want to apologize for … for what happened.”

“I’m not sure I understand what you’re talking about. I wanted to ask if you identified the victim.”

“No.”

“It’s horrible. You know, I thought about the last victim of this Hairdresser and got an idea. Are you interested?”

“Talk.”

“It could still be our beloved one, but something happened in his life. Something changed. It made him step over his principles, pushed him to kill again, to do this rushed, terrible murder to fight his insecurities. What do you think about this version?”

“It’s an interesting idea.”

“I think it’s a possibility. The perpetrator did a clean job, no evidence. Copycat wouldn’t have this level of professionalism. Unless he has killed before, but it would be doubtful. A copycat would leave some track. Anything.”

“It’s possible,” Shane said, but that was not what he thought about. It meant—nothing happened. It meant that for her nothing really happened. Did she pretend?

“If my theory is correct, you will find another body soon. The scumbag might even make a mistake if he rushed again.”

“Thank you for doing my job.”

“Don’t be venomous, Detective Aberson. It’s just a theory. I’m sure you’ve thought of it.”

“Thank you for believing in me.”

Parks laughed, but her laugh was tense, Shane felt it. He also felt that she wanted to say something else. He didn’t talk, just listened to the silence in the phone.

“You’re a good husband, Detective Aberson,” Evangeline finally said. “I’m glad everything finished the way it did.”

Aberson didn’t answer.

“I’ll see you soon,” Evangeline said, and cut the connection.

“See you soon,” Shane muttered.

He was glad and disappointed at the same time. Parks was a strong and independent woman, and she dictated the rules. Now he wasn’t sure that it was he who made the first move and not her.
