The painter turns to a waiting young man dressed in the costly finery of a knight and gestures to him.

“Please, it’s your moment. Walk slowly by this poor man.”

The model obeys.

“Look down towards him.” The painter commands. “Yes, like that! Now, your cape . . .”

The knight slices his burgundy cape in half with his sword. The cripple at his feet pulls on the fabric. According to the custom of the kingdom, a soldier owns only half of his garment. The other half belongs to the state. The knight gives away his own half.

“Good! Perfect!” the artist cries.

All know the story of Saint Martin, a soldier in the Roman legion. In the dead of winter, he gave a beggar his cloak.

The elegantly robed knight can’t keep his eyes off the good man on the ground. His expression is one of deep compassion and sadness. And in that moment the model and the soldier become one.
