Chapter Twenty

I was eager to see the progress Noah had made on Bunny’s project, but I didn’t want to go by unannounced. I also didn’t have the combination to the gate, so I suggested we could meet at the job then go have lunch. I could tell he was looking forward to showing me how far they’d come.

I didn’t see Noah’s truck when I pulled up, but I could tell men were working, so I went ahead in.

“Hey there,” a voice called out to me. It was one of Noah’s friends.

“Hey Billy,” I called back.

He came from the back and said, “Noah will be right back. Make yourself at home.”

Only a contractor or another interior designer could look at a home under construction and see the beauty in it. It looked great. There was still a lot to do, but I could definitely see it taking shape.

“It looks great, Billy. How’s it going?”

“Good,” he said, wiping his brow on his shirtsleeve.

I was dying to ask him what it was like working with someone like Bunny, so I did.

“Well, even for her age, she’s pretty hot. You’d better watch it,” he said with a wide grin. “She’s still trying her best to get her hooks into Noah.”

I shot him daggers.

“Not that he’s been interested,” he stammered. “He’s managed to get away with murder, though. Gettin’ her to do extra work.”

“I’ll bet,” I said, shaking my head. “Mind if I check it out?” I asked, but I’d already started looking around.

“Be my guest. I need to get back to work,” he said, putting his work gloves back on and heading towards the kitchen.

I knew I’d never be involved with this project, but I could picture it in a lake house décor, off whites and blues. I’d keep the oak ceiling and open beams, and…and then I heard Noah’s voice.

“Hellooo.” He called.

“Yoo-hoo,” came a woman’s voice right behind him.

I found my way back to the front of the house and there stood Noah with a sheepish grin on his face, behind Bunny, who was making her way over the rubble on the floor. He shrugged his shoulders.

“Hi, you two.” I said, as cheerfully as I could.

“Look who I found outside,” Bunny said, almost cooing

“I see.” I said. “Be careful in those heels.”

“I was out shopping and I wasn’t planning on stopping by, but I couldn’t help it. I had to see what was new. It’s looking wonderful, isn’t it?”

“I think so. It’s a beautiful home, Bunny. And when you’re finished with it, it’ll be fabulous.” Boy, did I lay it on, and I could tell she was delighted.

“I told Noah I’d take him to lunch, but he said you two were already planning on going…so why don’t we make it a threesome?”

If I’d had a drink, I would have choked on it. But instead, I quickly weighed getting stuck with the cougar, or not having lunch with Noah.

“Let me just look around, then I’m ready to go,” she said. “Billy…can you give me
