Almost as soon as Perry has left, a healthcare assistant comes to escort us to Florence’s X-ray in a room at the end of the corridor.

It’s a quick procedure and apart from the odd spurt of crying when the radiographer has to place her arm in a certain position, Florence is really brave.

When we’re back in the small room again, I sit with Florence on my knee, gently rocking and reassuring her.

I think about texting Carrie to give her an update but to be honest, I don’t know everything yet myself and I can’t help feeling a bit resentful towards her. After all, she’s the reason we’re here. My phone is in my handbag and I’ve no wish to start looking at it.

Perry comes back in after about ten minutes.

‘You’ve been gone a while,’ I say.

‘I used the bathroom. Is that OK?’

He sits, moodily scrolling through his phone. It’s obvious he still hasn’t forgiven me for leaving Florence alone with Carrie.

‘What did you have to sign?’ I ask him, jiggling a colourful teething toy in front of a disinterested Florence.

‘Just something reception should have asked me to sign when we arrived,’ he says without taking his eyes from his phone screen.

‘Did you … say anything to Roisin? Did she ask about Carrie at all?’

‘No and no. She’s made it quite clear she’s not allowed to discuss it.’

I sigh. We can’t go on like this.

‘I know what you think about Florence’s arm, but give me some credit, will you? I know my own sister.’ I keep my voice low just in case the walls in the clinic are paper thin.

‘You keep saying that, but you didn’t know about the problems she was having at work, did you? She kept all that very well hidden.’ He glances at an incoming text, then pushes his phone into his pocket and runs his fingers through his short, gelled hair. ‘Look, Alexa, I’m not saying that Carrie is a monster. What I am saying is that she might be teetering on the edge of something we’re not aware of at the moment. She might not be in her right mind. We just don’t know. All this stress would get to anyone, right?’

He’s right about the stress thing, but I’m not about to agree with him.

‘The stuff Cameron said … it’s really serious, Alexa. She could have killed him in that bath!’

‘Oh for goodness’ sake, he’s probably just saying that for effect!’ I snap, thinking about the police visit to Carrie earlier that I won’t be sharing with him. ‘The day I start believing anything that comes out of that lying rat’s mouth is the day I might as well give up.’

He shakes his head as if I’m a hopeless case.

‘Stressed or not, Carrie will cope far better with what’s happening with the support of her family. Florence will comfort her, distract her from what’s happening. I can’t just take that away from her; it could send her right over that edge you’re talking about.’

But he’s having none of it.
