DREAMA sighs.

DREAMA: Maybe you’re right. But I wanna see just the same. What we looked like before everything got so—messed up. When we weren’t—

ELIZA: What?

DREAMA: Such strangers.

ELIZA flicks the rest of her cigarette away. DREAMA takes one last drag, and does the same.

DREAMA: You know, there’ll be a picture of Adie in those albums somewhere?

ELIZA: You never listen. How many times?

DREAMA: I just don’t see how you can’t be thinking about her. With everything that’s happening.

ELIZA puts her back to DREAMA.

DREAMA: Someone has to say something. It’s why you came home isn’t it?

ELIZA: (shakes her head) You a fortune teller now?

DREAMA: I feel it inside.

Taps her chest.

DREAMA: Same as I know you don’t really wanna find that goddamn bomb.

ELIZA turns around, gazes at DREAMA for a long time.

DREAMA: That’s not what I’m doing here.

ELIZA: Then what in the hell are you doing? Because this isn’t helping. You! And now Cliff! This isn’t something you can fix. I’m dying Dreama. Fucking dying!

DREAMA has tears in her eyes. She turns away to wipe her face.

DREAMA: Well—you’re not dead—yet.

ELIZA laughs loudly.

ELIZA: (then serious) I just—

DREAMA: Go on.

ELIZA: (shrugs) It hurts. Like I’m on fire inside. All of the time. As if my fucking bones are kindling. I can’t barely stand it some days.

DREAMA: What can I do?

ELIZA shakes her head.

ELIZA: Nothing—

DREAMA looks up at the sky, like she might find a sign there.

DREAMA: I don’t know what to do.

ELIZA: Then don’t do anything.

SHANE and CLIFF enter stage left, after their swim beneath the iron bridge, their hair still damp. DREAMA takes hold of SHANE’s arm, and they go inside black barn, leave CLIFF and ELIZA alone in the field.

ELIZA: You gonna stand there staring? Or say something?

CLIFF: I wanna help! Tell me what to do.

ELIZA: You got a metal detector in that van of yours?

CLIFF: Huh?

CLIFF steps forward and hugs her hard. They stand in the field, together, while the sound of the merry-go-round builds..
