Chapter 25
Sitting in the dark in an old easy chair in the corner of the small room, she took in the night setting in outside the small windows. Her mind had gone to some pretty dark places today as she imagined a life without Neilâbut she had also gone back over everything that had brought her and Neil together to begin with, including all the misunderstandings, the jealousy, and her ideas about what he really wanted.
If it hadnât been for Neil, she wouldnât be alive today. Heâd saved her when the hurricane had ripped through after sheâd refused to evacuate. Instead of walking away and leaving her, heâd dug in and kept her safe. That was what she loved about him, his sense of duty, his need to protect those he cared about. He was overbearing and so strong willed at times that she wondered whether she really had what it took to be with him. She wasnât like her sisters-in-law, Diana and Emily, who had figured out a way to be with their strong-willed Friessen men. They made it look so easy, the way they had their men believing they were making all the decisions when, in fact, those strong, stubborn women had figured out how to love their men without allowing them to take away who they were. It was an art she was positive she wasnât strong enough to pull off.
Maybe that was why she hadnât gone home.
She stared at the keys in her hand. Using them and staying with Jim, she knew, meant she would be doing the same thing Neil was now doing to her. It would be pouring salt in their wounds. With Neil moving Maria in, it had seemed as if he was trading Candy for another woman, but she wasnât one of those women who jumped from one man to another. Even though Jimâs offer was platonic and decent, she knew Neil well enough to know heâd never believe Jimâs intentions had been noble. There were just some lines you didnât cross with your man.
Candy gazed at Cat, who was fast asleep in one of the new beds Candy had purchased. There were six others in the room, but no one shared Catâs single bed, covered with the princess sheets and the doll Candy had bought her. The little girl had lovely brown hair that had shone after Candy brushed it before bed. She was clean and wearing the pink nightgown Candy had also bought her. The little girl had fallen fast asleep, knowing that Candy was there watching over her.
There was a light tap on the door, which was slightly ajar. She slid around, and her heart thudded when she locked eyes with Neil. He wasnât the neat and tidy Neil he usually was. He was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt and a light brown jacket. His hair was unruly, as if heâd been running his hands through it. She slowly rose on shaky legs as he stepped into the room, his gaze sweeping over the children and landing on Cat.
