Chapter 7 – Challenging times

Sir Philip de Braose and Sergeant Stillman rode westwards out of London early on a rainy October morning. Despite his thick mantle, the knight’s skin quickly became damp, with no prospect of getting dry all day. Probably not even then, knowing how ill-heated country taverns tended to be. No matter how close he could get to a fire, it’d be a long time before he felt anything better than chilled to the marrow. His sergeant was probably better off. Not having to wear the woollen mantle of the order but being clad instead in a leather jacket, he was less likely to be so heavily soaked; his broad brimmed hat should keep the water from running down the inside of his clothing. At least, sighed Philip, they hadn’t been forced to ride two to a horse. The traditional image of Templar Knights sharing a horse as a sign of poverty was just an historical curiosity. But knowing he was in disgrace, even if uncertain why, he was grateful the Master hadn’t insisted on such a show of submission …
