AIMEE STREET
I take my hand off the door, allowing it to shut just before the glass almost slaps against my nose. And when I close my eyes, I sigh, fogging up the window of the door. After a long pause, I turn.
âIâm gonna give you two more minutes,â I say, marching back toward him. âIf you donât explain who the fuck you are and why youâve been following me within those two minutes⦠Iâm gone.â
He points his whole hand to the bench I had been sitting on moments ago and, after standing and staring at him with my hands on my hips for what seems like way too long while water continues to gurgle and spill on to the table from the bottle I flipped over, I finally oblige and slide back down opposite him.
âYou think youâre a good scam artist, donât you?â he whispers across the table. âYou think youâre getting better at it.â
I lick across my crooked teeth and then decide to match him with the same level of cockiness heâs throwing across the table at me. Confidence is the one skill I know I possess. Sometimes I think itâs the only skill I possess. Itâs why it made sense I became a confidence woman.
âI am damn good at it,â I back at him.
âYouâll be caught. Youâll end up in prison.â I shrug, but he just continues. âThe thing about scamming,â he says, leaning closer to me, âis that every job is a new job. And every new job is a fresh opportunity to get caught. And you will get caught, Aim. The more dangerous you play the game, the easier it is to get caught. Youâre trying to level up, arenât you? Youâre not playing with random strangers on the streets no more, taking their watches, taking their wallets. Youâre messing with the big boys now. Inviting executives to your pitches⦠employees of the Governor, for Christ sake.â
I squint at him, then I rub my hands together, reminding myself that I am more than capable of matching this fucker for confidence.
âDo you work for the Governor?â I ask. He laughs. A real laugh this time, not a snide huff through his grotesque hairy fucking nostrils. âWho do you work for then?â
âI work for myself.â
I feel my confidence wane. Because, Iâm not sure what to ask next. So, I lean into the table and slap both palms to it.
âWhat the fuck do you want from me⦠tell me?â
âIâm just tryna help,â he says. He leans back, stretching both arms across the back of the bench, trying to look calm and cool, while I remain leaning forward, holding his stare, my teeth clenched. I finally exhale a deep sigh, and I lean back on my bench too, before reaching inside my jacket pocket to grab for my vaporizer. In the silence, while weâre still both staring at each other, my vaporizer buzzes and I glance down at it.
âWant a hit?â I ask.
He holds a hand up to wave a no.
