Chapter Ten – Have You Been Beating Up On My Kids?

Shortly after Dusty Fog had replaced the clothing he had divested in order to exhibit his exceptionally powerful torso and perform the feat of strength, the children of Cyrus and Maggie Bollinger arrived at the schoolhouse. Resembling their parents in size, they were black-haired and respectively fourteen and thirteen years of age, Cyrus Junior being the elder twin by about forty-five minutes, he and Jodie were bare footed and clad in old shirts—the sleeves rolled up to show well developed muscles—and patched Levi’s pants. Mary-Anne, who was already buxom and curvaceous beyond her years, had on a worn gingham frock. Like her brothers, she had changed into this attire and left her shoes at home as a gesture of disrespect to the new incumbents of the school.

One glance at the trio as they entered the classroom was sufficient to inform the small Texan of their intentions. From what he had been told about them by Samuel Williams, he knew that he was facing the major threat to his authority over the other pupils. He was also aware that only by establishing a standard of discipline could he win their respect and the kind of rapport he required to incur the wrath of Daniel ‘Bull’ Keleney.

Stamping arrogantly across the threshold, closely followed by Mary-Anne and Jodie, Junior—as he was known—paused and looked across the classroom. Having seen their new schoolteachers from a distance the previous evening, neither he nor his siblings had been impressed.

Nor, making a closer—if no more discerning—examination, did any of the trio see any reason to change their opinion. The twins matched the man in height and were somewhat heavier built. Even the ‘baby’ of the family was almost as big. What was more, having been trained in self-defense by their father, they had become the undisputed leaders of the other pupils.

As had happened when Orville Webster arrived, being conscious of their position of authority, the three youngsters felt it incumbent upon themselves to test the mettle of the new schoolteachers. However, from what they could see as they entered, none of the trio expected it would prove of a similarly high quality as that of the popular predecessor.

‘You’re late,’ Dusty pointed out, sounding mildly critical and studying the newcomers with experienced eyes. ‘You should have been here a quarter of an hour ago.’

‘Why, teach’?’ Junior challenged, remembering the response he had heard made by an entertainer one night when he had been a clandestine member of the audience at the Bull’s Head Saloon. ‘What happened?’

A few of the pupils began to laugh, but the merriment died away as the small Texan swung his gaze in their direction. However, in spite of the evidence that they were at least wary of antagonizing him, he knew he must deal quickly with the latest challenge. If he did not, he would lose the ground he had gained by what they considered to have been an exhibition of abnormal strength.
