Chapter Eighteen

Love Lost

Sophia and Marcus were giving the group a tour of the southeast quadrant of the city, which contained an art Gallery with perfect replicas of such famous paintings as Bosch's The Garden of Delights , Michelangelo's Il Giudizio Universale , Dali's Persistence of Memory , and Edward Munch's The Scream .

As they strolled through the display of testimony to the creativity of the human mind, a panel along the wall switched to a video of a man.

"Sophia, you have a call," Eve stated.

"Yes?" Sophia answered as she approached the panel.

"You are required at The Observatory," the man said. "Mr. Elliot's session with Mr. White completed early. Mr. White has requested that Miss Davidson be sent in today."

"What happened?" Sophia requested further information.

"Mr. Elliot passed out," the man stated dryly. "We've placed him back in his room."

"Unbelievable," Sophia huffed as she returned to the group. "Alex, are you ready to speak with Mr. White?"

"No, I wasn't expecting to talk to him until tomorrow."

"What happened with Nick?" Thomas inquired.

"He passed out," Sophia openly acknowledged. "That doesn't matter, though, he did his part and met with White. Now, Alex, if you want I'll ask Mr. White if he can speak with you tomorrow as originally planned."

Matthew, who had been a comfort to Alex throughout the past couple of days, encouraged her to go forward. "Nothing is going to be any different tomorrow, you might as well get it over with."

Alex was hesitant, "If I wait we'll at least know what Nick found out, if anything. Shouldn't we be gathering as much information before each of us talk with him?"

Jack jumped into the conversation, "I think we are really over thinking these talks with this Mr. White. I've been up close and personal with a lot of extremists in my time, and I can tell you they all love to talk... they'll chew your ear off explaining how God is great, but in the end they just walk you in circles never giving you any intel that actually matters."

"So what are you saying?" Alex asked.

"I'm saying you might as well get it over with today. I doubt Nick uncovered anything that Cynthia or Thomas didn't. Go in, let the guy say his piece, then it's over and done with.'

'Actually, maybe you should go last and I should talk to him," Jack suggested. "No offense to you guys, but we still don't know who he is, how he came to create this virus, who he is working for, what it would take to get him to not release it... basically we've got a whole lot of nothing."

Thomas shot down Jack's idea, "This guy isn't an extremist. What I mean is he's not attached to some ideological zealotry. He's not doing this to get 72 virgins in heaven and he's not targeting any specific countries or races.'

'I think Cynthia nailed it with her Angel of Death diagnosis. He genuinely believes he's doing the right thing. You going in there and beating the truth out of him is only going to reinforce his beliefs that humans are savages that need to be put down.
