Alina didn’t say anything to me about the run-in with Ursula the night before. Clearly, my nemesis had not brought the altercation to my boss’s notice. It should have made me feel better but I worried that Ursula had something even worse up her sleeve. The morning classes went by in a flurry of activity. I was just finishing up with the pre-K group when the bell over the door jingled. I looked up to see Robin approach. He carried a paper sack and the scent of garlic and herbs wafted enticingly from it.

“Your father told me Italian is your favorite,” Robin smiled. “I thought we could have a picnic lunch since it’s so fine out.”

I looked to Alina, who nodded. “Just be back for the after-school lessons.”

After snagging my coat and bag, we headed out to the town greenway which sat about a block away from the gym. Several people walked dogs along the paved trail and I greeted each one by name as we wound our way through the battered picnic tables by the duck pond.

No ducks today. But the ice had melted and sunlight sparkled on the water. Someone was fishing on the far end. Ignoring the benches, I lowered myself onto a flat-topped rock. After a moment’s consideration, Robin copied my movement.

He passed me the bag and I peeked in to find two meatball subs, one with cheese and one without. My father really had divvied up my preferences.

“This is nice, I said, unwrapping my cheese-free sub. “Thank you.”

He nodded and we ate in silence for a time, watching the wind ripple the surface of the water. I didn’t want to kill the tranquil moment so I stalled. “What’s it like, working with my father?”

Robin frowned and thought about it. “A bit tedious. So much paperwork and pointless phone calls. But overall it’s not an unpleasant way to spend a few hours. And I do enjoy finding all the legal loopholes.”

“You would.” I grinned and touched his arm lightly to take the sting out of my words.

His hand crept up and lay over the top of mine, entwining our fingers. A glance at his face stole my breath. He stared down at our joined hands, his eyebrows pulled together tightly.

“You look baffled.”

“Explain this to me,” he all but ordered.

“What?” I asked, a bit breathless. That electrical connection flowed between the two of us yet again.

“This need I have to touch you.” He frowned. “It’s not sexual. At least not entirely. But it’s a want that I find I can’t ignore. And when I do touch you like this….”

I held my breath, almost afraid to hear what he was going to say.

“It eases something within me.” He looked up. “Can you explain what it is?”

“It’s companionship. Caring. Affection.” I bit my lip. “Don’t you ever just enjoy being with someone, Robin?”

“Just you,” he murmured. “Only ever you.”

A puff of air escaped. He was centuries old. How had he never shared a sweet and tender moment with anyone before?

The look in his eyes was intense.
