Chapter Twelve
On the Train from Atlanta
“Good morning, Mr. Pickford,” Annabelle called from the lower berth as she sat up. She lifted the dark blue gingham robe from where it lay on top of the bedclothes and put it on. “Mr. Pickford?” Annabelle tied the sash around her waist, climbed out and looked up. The berth above her was empty.
Sarah entered the compartment, fully dressed. “I found him three cars up, passed out. It seems he and another passenger share the same affinity for cheap alcohol.”
A rap came at the door and a muffled voice from outside announced they would be arriving in Boston within the hour.
“Well, at least he may be more malleable in this state,” Sarah observed, “but difficult to carry. Perhaps we’ll be able to wake him.”
“I need to get my clothes on before we consider our next move.” Annabelle snatched her raiment from a hook on the wall and dressed. “I’d just as soon leave him.”
“You have good cause, but I am confident he will prove useful. My visions have never led me astray.” Sarah smiled at Annabelle, who simply frowned.
Dressed and their luggage packed, Annabelle and Sarah made their way back to the coach seats and reclaimed Nigel. They managed to rouse him enough so he could stumble down the aisle, through the next two cars, and into their own. Annabelle shoved him into the restroom.
“Relieve yourself, sir,” shouted Annabelle, “and I hope you fall down the hole!”
After several minutes she pounded on the door but got no answer. Fortunately, Nigel forgot to throw the bolt. They opened the door and saw him squat down in the corner with his trousers around his knees. They almost gave up but finally got him extricated from the small room.
Sarah and Annabelle brought him back to their cabin and changed his shirt. As the train pulled into the Boston and Providence Railway Station, Sarah flagged down a porter who carried their bags out to the platform. The two women wrestled Nigel, in his stocking feet, out to the platform as well. There Nigel began to sing loudly and out of tune. Fortunately for everyone within earshot, he soon sat down on their pile of belongings and went to sleep.
Edgar, carrying his suitcase and Nigel’s shoes, joined Annabelle and Sarah. “I see Mr. Pickford has comported himself well,” he said. “At least as well as could be expected.”
