Hyksos Warfare Innovations

Today, one of the more mysterious and controversial aspects of Hyksos history concerns how a relatively unknown group of semi-nomadic raiders were able to carve out a kingdom in the middle of the homeland of one of the most powerful and sophisticated cultures of the period. Although massive immigration from the Levant may have contributed partly or even primarily to the situation, it does not explain everything. The Second Intermediate Period was a time of great change in Egypt, where the old order disintegrated and a new one was established, and like all great changes, technological innovations played a key role. When one thinks of ancient Egyptian warfare, the chariot, bow, and curved khopesh sword often come to mind, but all of those weapons only became part of Egyptian culture during the New Kingdom and were likely introduced to Egypt by the Hyksos.
