You have 24 hours to assign unused XP, or they will be randomly assigned.
I went ahead and added all the XP to celestial guardian, bringing it to a whopping 625 out of 1,100 XP. I frowned. That had only been seventy XP; what happened to the rest?
âRemember, celestial guardian is a much rarer profession than pugilist, John, so itâs harder to level. Those cultivators didnât give you as much XP for that profession.â
âRight, I hadnât considered that.â I hesitated as a thought occurred to me. âSara, which do you think is better: leveling up my professions, or ranking up my cultivation?â
âHonestly? Both. I know that doesnât sound helpful, but theyâre apples and oranges in some ways. Increasing your profession level, especially in your rarer professions, will boost your stats and grant you new abilities. However, ranking up your cultivation will make your qi more effective, so it takes less of it to power your techniques and theyâll have greater effectiveness. Plus, some advanced techniques will require you to use higher-ranked qi.â
I sighed. That wasnât particularly helpful. âOkay, short-term and long-term. Which is better for which?â
âWellâ¦I suppose that in the long run, leveling up professions is better. After all, when you leave this world and go to a new one, thereâs a decent chance that your cultivation wonât work anymore. Youâll still have your stat points and any abilities that arenât qi-powered, though. In the short term, ranking up your cultivation is probably more important since it will make you much more powerful in this world.â
âPerfect. Thatâs what I needed to know, thank you.â
âI literally exist to help you, John. Itâs not a problem.â
âI am wondering,â Jing said softly, interrupting my silent conversation. âWhyâ¦why did you choose to show yourself to those practitioners? Had you attacked them immediately, you could have defeated them in seconds, possibly before they could have responded. Speaking to them did not seem â practical, and you have shown yourself to be such.â
âIt was, though,â I smiled at her. âI donât know this city, Jing. I donât know its laws, politics, and customs. I donât know the school those five said they came fromâ¦â
âCrimson Night was the name they claimed.â
âRight, I donât know anything about the Crimson Night school. I donât know who those five were, or why the men were so subservient to the woman. She might just be a bully, but she might also be the daughter of someone important and powerful. If I killed them, I might bring down the wrath of the local law enforcement, her school, or someone powerful.â
âYet, you could have defeated them without killing them, and they would have stood little chance.â
âTrue, but then they would have said that I only won because I cheated, and they might have come looking for us again. By giving them every chance to attack us first, we showed them that we can beat them even when theyâre prepared. Hopefully, after that fight, they wonât be eager to face us again anytime soon.â
She nodded, and I half turned away before remembering that I had a question for her, as well.
